I am watching "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore." What an amazing movie. I love Ellen Burstyn, and Diane Ladd.
Anyway, they end up in Tucson in the movie. And Alice's son is taking music lessons (At Chicago Music Store!!!) and his friend (Jodie Foster) points out the "Tucson is the capital of weird."
Its probably true.
I love this town. Its an amazing place to live. I know I have to leave. I also know that I will come back someday.
The other day I was driving from I-19 and Irvington to 6th and 29th. I took 6th Ave all the way up. As I drove through the heart of South Tucson, I started to think about all the reasons why I love this side of town. More than any other.
Now, in honor of Tucson, here are my top reasons to live in South Tucson:
1. Driving through South Tucson is like a real life game of Mario Kart. It doesn't really matter if you run that red light, because the three people behind you will run it too.
2. They have completely given up on English. All the billboards and most of the store fronts are in Spanish. Noteworthy: El Super (supermarket) doesn't have an entrance, it has an "entrada." Also, the last time someone asked me for change in South Tucson, he asked me if I spoke English first.
3. It boasts the creepiest/awesomest Walgreen's in the world. 6th and 29th. Characters abound. Its right next to a bus stop. You figure it out. I love it.
4. People still use payphones!!!
5. Three words: Pico De Gallo.
