Fireflies

I heard this song the other day. Actually I was reading a blog and someone had posted this really cool homemade video of all these kids doing synchronized moves with glow sticks to this song. I couldn't find that video.

Anyway, it kinda sounds like the Postal Service, except super super auto-tuned. I kinda like the song. Its ok. Catchy. I had never heard of the band, Owl City, but that doesn't mean much because my musical education stopped about 4 years ago.

The reason why I like this song is because it reminds me of catching fireflies as a kid. There is something very magical about it. They only come out at sunset in the summertime. As bbqs and backyard parties wind down, all of a sudden the sky lights up.

I remember reaching with tiny child hands. Grasping at air in futility. Finally, success! Snatch one right out of the air! Clasp my hands tightly together, only to pry my thumbs open just a sliver. Peek in with one eye. Inside my cupped hands a little flicker of light, pulsating quickly. Then whooosh! Open hands! I remember watching as it got brighter and brighter as it flew further from it's captivity. They always dim a little when you catch them.

I guess people do too.

But, for a split second, you can hold a piece of light.
