Retail Hell

I just walked out of a store on University that will remain unnamed. I was just checking out the goods. As I walked in, not a single person said "hi." I perused the sale section, looking for some summer jammies. I actually found some for $10 but I didn't get them because I am that broke.

Anyway, as I walked through the rest of the store I became very angry. I found myself arbitrarily re-hanging things and folding as I went along. I came across some more cute PJs. $68. I'll say it again. $68. I fiddled with the garment until I found the tag. 100% polyester. Awesome.

What a goddamn rip off.

I find that most people who work retail know fuck-all about it. They don't know fabrics, or construction, or manufacturing details. If you don't know those things, how can you possibly explain to someone why they should pay $68 for a polyester PJ onesie. I mean, really. Have some pride.

I have spent many years working retail. I have been in at 6 am for receiving and in til 1 am for pullbacks. I have spent hours on my knees scanning the teeny tiny barcodes of necklaces for inventory. I have folded t shirts (sleeves in, fold in half), jeans (fold at the knees, fold in half), sweaters (fold at elbows, fold in half). I have hung things (oh damn, the shoulder slipped) and re hung things (dammit it fell off again!). I have worked the day after Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas. I have calculated hours and hours and hours of individual sales goals (they are done by the number of hours each employee works).

My point is this, retail work is drudgery, but its not hard. Smile and say hi when someone walks in. If a customer walks up to the register with something to buy, get off the goddamn phone. Fold while you go, because your store looks awful. Be nice to customers. When people are rude to me it makes me want to come in 5 minutes before closing and unfold everything. Also try a bunch of stuff on and leave it all inside out on the dressing room floor.

I've been there people. Buck up. Its a job. Be glad you have one.
