Cinco De Mayo

I dread this day every year. Five years ago I got my DUI. I guess technically it was May 6th, but whatever.

Anyway, May 5th 2005 was kind of a turning point in my life. By the end of summer I had completely changed myself. I purged (literally and metaphorically) people and elements from my life that were toxic, for lack of a better word. It took me about 2 years total to really flip my life around. It was hard.

Like any dramatic change there is a profound sense of loss. I sometimes mourn who I used to be. It is illogical, because I was fairly unhappy for a lot of it. But I had a lot of fun, too. So the first week of May leads to reflection and introspection.

In preparation for "The Day," I stopped after I finished my homework and had a glass of wine. Okay, I had 2. Then I came home and watched "The Royal Tenenbaums" and snuggled with my dog. She is a champion snuggler, and I really really needed it.

TRT is one of my all time favorite movies. I love everything Wes Anderson does. Usually, when I am watching a comedy by myself I don't really laugh out loud. Laughter seems to be a shared activity. I spent my night on the couch laughing hysterically. By myself. It is quirky humor, with just enough physical comedy thrown in to keep it from becoming so hip it hurts.

My favorite line:

"I wrote a suicide note. Once I regained consciousness."

Its been a while since I had seen it.

Anderson movies always have the most whimsical settings. I want to live in the house on Archer St. I want to travel the seas in the Belafonte. I want to go to school at Rushmore.

I still haven't seen "The Darjeeling Limited" or "Fantastic Mr Fox." I don't get out much, so unless it streams on Netflix I don't really watch it.

I remember that time before 2005. I remember being bummed because I wouldn't see you much and you could go to bars with your fake i.d. and I couldn't.

TRT is also one of my favorite movies. And another reason we're best friends. You should also really enjoy The Darjeeling Limited (beautifully shot) and The Fantastic Mr. Fox (quirky and fun, and great Bobby Fuller song at the end.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is amazing! Aidan owns it, I can ask if you can borrow it, but he's still been watching it once a day since he bought it.
